{"id":30489,"date":"2024-03-19T12:00:45","date_gmt":"2024-03-19T17:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cyberprmusic.stage.12sm.us\/call-to-action-10-ways-to-grow-one-gigantic-mailing-list\/"},"modified":"2024-12-14T22:55:12","modified_gmt":"2024-12-14T22:55:12","slug":"call-to-action-10-ways-to-grow-one-gigantic-mailing-list-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cyberprmusic.com\/call-to-action-10-ways-to-grow-one-gigantic-mailing-list-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Musician&#8217;s Guide To Growing A Massive Email List"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You got into this for the passion and the love of the craft, but somewhere along the way, you&#8217;d probably stab a pen in your eye and then attempt to grow your email list.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Here&#8217;s a reason to want to &#8211; <strong>Money<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>The two main arguments I\u2019ve heard from countless artists about why they don&#8217;t want to do this are:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Excuse #1 &#8211; <\/strong>You don\u2019t want to send emails because you don\u2019t want to \u201cbother\u201d your fans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Excuse #2 &#8211; <\/strong>You think you have \u201cnothing to say,\u201d but what may also be happening is that you hate\u00a0<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">how\u00a0<em>other\u00a0<\/em>artists communicate with their email list and <\/span>don\u2019t want to be like <i>them.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Here are the real reasons why your email list is the most important thing to focus on:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the synopsis from a well-known McKinsey study:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cE-mail remains a significantly more effective way to acquire customers than social media\u2014nearly 40 times that of Facebook and Twitter combined\u2026That\u2019s because 91 percent of all US consumers still use e-mail daily.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of it this way: social media is like a cocktail mixer, and your email list is an invite-only hang with your best. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Socials are great for casting a wide net and seeing who might be interested in being friends, but your email list is where your most faithful supporters live. <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/aimusicmarketing.tunepipe.com\/webinar\/\">Social media is still important for showing growth and engagemen<\/a><\/strong><\/span>t, but when it comes to income, email is still the most vital asset you will build to generate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0revenue. You make relationships with fans on your social networks, but you turn those relationships into <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">customers <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with email.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And then there is this:<\/p>\n<p><strong>I get constant feedback from artists who tell me that they have spent vast amounts of time and money growing their social media followings, yet they STILL report that they can&#8217;t figure out how to monetize.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This makes sense &#8211; while having healthy social media #s is essential, it is much more important to have direct communication with fans.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Once you establish this, create rapport with your list. This does not mean blasting out email &#8220;newsletters;&#8221; it means actual exchanges where you respond to people who react to your emails every time. You need to take the time to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyberprmusic.com\/email\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">build communications<\/span><\/strong><\/a> where fans can react, respond to, and answer!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><b>Understanding &#8220;Lead Nurturing&#8221; Is Crucial<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Before you go ahead and start building a massive email list, make sure you think through what you want to say to new members of your list and how you want to strengthen existing communications. This will take time, but it is essential.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine you&#8217;ve just met a new friend. You&#8217;re eager to connect with them, to learn more, hang out a bit, but all of a sudden they go silent. Or start acting totally different than they did in person. Immediately, you become less interested. Email lists are the same, so you want an action plan for when people first come to your list.<\/p>\n<p>The big picture is you want to take your fans on the journey through your Three Communities from<strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyberprmusic.com\/your-three-communities-part-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ambient<\/a><\/span><\/strong> (not yet on your list), to<strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyberprmusic.com\/your-three-communities-part-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Engaged<\/a><\/span> <\/strong>(On the list but maybe not yet really engaged), to <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyberprmusic.com\/your-three-communities-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Super<\/a><\/span> <\/strong>(Fans who buy from you and support you!).<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step One &#8211; Create Your Email\u00a0Automation\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This will take some doing. It would be best if you created a few different series. Email newsletter management systems like MailChimp and Constant Contact will allow you to program these series and have robust management tools.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Create the following three first:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Welcome\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014 these are the first communications a new subscriber will receive saying thanks for joining my list &#8211; here is a little about me (and maybe even give away a few great tracks or exclusive goodies).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nurture <\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 these emails take your readers on a storytelling journey &#8211; you can talk about your history, tell compelling stories about specific songs, or recount something meaningful that has happened in your career as an artist that defines who you are. MailChimp has a great<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/mailchimp.com\/resources\/getting-started-with-mailchimp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> guide<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; look for subscriber engagement segments. Constant Contact will also take you on a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.constantcontact.com\/email-marketing\/email-campaign-ideas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">deep dive\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/a>into how to set yourself up right. I use <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/kit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\"><strong>Kit<\/strong><\/a>, <span style=\"color: #000000;\">and I love it<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step Three &#8211; Build Your Massive Email List! <\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><b>Technique #1 &#8211; Add Family, Friends, and Acquaintances<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We all have huge inboxes stuffed with emails from people we know. \u00a0Are they already on your email list? If not, email them and ask, \u201cIs it okay for me to add you to my newsletter list?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Building a massive email list will take time, but according to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bain &amp; Company<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, acquiring a new customer costs six to seven times more than retaining an existing one. \u00a0So, consider those in your inbox \u201cexisting\u201d and strengthen your relationship with them. It will be well worth the effort.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never add someone without getting permission first, even if it\u2019s a friend, because that\u2019s considered SPAM. \u00a0Legally, it would be best if you asked for the opt-\u00adin. So, by adding the link directly to your newsletter service, you are making sure you are compliant!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a sample email you can send to nicely ask fans to join your mailing list (because you CAN&#8217;T just add, then it&#8217;s Illegal!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dear [<\/span><\/i><b><i>NAME<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">],\u2028<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b><i>(Start with something personal that connects you to this person here)\u2028<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Would it be okay if I added you to my monthly newsletter list? <\/span><\/i><b><i>(Next, explain the WIIFM \u201cwhat&#8217;s in it for me\u201d to your potential readers so they feel compelled to sign up!)<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please let me know if it\u2019s okay with you.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I would love to share my <strong>(add a description of your fabulous incentive)<\/strong> with you as well <\/span><\/i><b><i>(sentence about the music or something great someone has said about it)<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><i>(\u00adAdd opt-in link here\u00ad [Set a link up through your newsletter provider])<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2028<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I will never give your e\u00admail address to anyone else, and you can opt out of my list at any time.\u2028<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks,\u2028<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b><i>[Signature File]<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<h4><b>Technique #2 &#8211; <\/b><b>Track Potential Subscribers With a Folder<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create a separate folder for potential newsletter sign\u00adups in your email and name it \u201cPotential Newsletter Subscribers.\u201d \u00a0Throughout the week, when you get an email from someone you think would make a nice addition to the list, move them into that box. \u00a0Once a month, before you send out your newsletter, schedule an hour to sit down and invite those new people to subscribe using the formula above!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Don\u2019t forget your sales email addresses. \u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who have already purchased a product or service from you will likely buy from you again. \u00a0Go through your sales records (CD Baby has them all for you ) and email everyone who has bought from you on Paypal, Square, or any other service you use with a personal note inviting them to subscribe to your newsletter if they are not already on it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Technique #3 &#8211; <\/b><b>Schedule a Set Time Each Month for List Building<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once a month, sit down and actively add the people you have met or corresponded with to your e\u00admail list. \u00a0You will be amazed at how many people you contact with whom you never add to your list simply because it slipped your mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>TIP:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00adThere may be a pile of business cards or unanswered requests on LinkedIn to add as well!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Bonus tip<\/strong>: make a spreadsheet with the names, cities, and notes about these people. It&#8217;s a great networking tool!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Asking for emails on Facebook<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Facebook, there are two strategies to employ:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0Create a boosted post highlighting your fabulous incentive with a CTA to opt into your mailing list. Test effectiveness and track results to see if this strategy works for you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0Visit the personal profile of anyone you regularly interact with, and send them a message asking if they would be interested in your fabulous incentive. Always make sure you send a personal note rather than a generic request.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Asking for emails on Threads<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Threads, asking for an email address at the appropriate time is essential. \u00a0Once you have @ replied back and forth with someone multiple times, it is okay to direct message (DM) them and ask for their email address. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always assure them that their email address is safe and that you will never sell it or give it to another party. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Technique #4 &#8211; Create Social Posts Incentives for Those Who Sign Up for Your Newsletter. \u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use Canva to create some JUICY and fun CTAs as offerings. Create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyberprmusic.com\/musicians-guide-to-using-bitly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #ff6600;\"><strong>bit.ly<\/strong><\/span><\/a> links to track your effectiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #ff6600;\"><strong>10 CTA&#8217;s \/ Giveaways you can offer your fans in exchange for their email addresses\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Remember that some of these options may take some time, effort, and even money to produce, but as the old saying goes, &#8216;you have to spend money to make money&#8217;. This process is an important investment in the growth and success of your career:<\/p>\n<h4><strong>1. Private Video of an Unreleased Song or a Cover<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Set up a private video on Vimeo that requires a password and exchange the password for an email address. Make this video something special\u2026 like an acoustic version of a fan favorite or a cool and unique cover of one of your favorite songs. This video could also be a &#8216;secret&#8217; look into the recording process or a behind-the-scenes look at a recent tour. The direction of this video truly depends on what your fans are looking for.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>2. Exclusive Download of Remixed Fan Favorites<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This is an easy win if you can remix a song. Choose a song you know your fans love and do something unique with it. Maybe you include new instruments and electronic elements to an otherwise bare song or a feature from an artist in your scene that you know your fans will appreciate.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>3. Exclusive Download of an Unreleased Song<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Do you have unreleased music that was left over from a previous project? If so, take a song, or even a few songs and put together a package of unreleased music that you can easily give away for free in exchange for an email address.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>4. Free Concert Ticket<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>If you and your band is focused on performing live, give your fans a voucher for a free ticket to see you live. Who knows\u2026 maybe you&#8217;ve got a lot of fans out there who enjoy your music but haven&#8217;t been convinced enough to pay to see you perform live.\u00a0 Now, you not only have more fans who WANT to come to see you live, but you have their email addresses so you can contact them directly when you are performing in their area!<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>5. Free, Exclusive Merch<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If merch sales are a big revenue driver for you, why not create something unique for the mailing list subscribers that they can get for free when they join? Word to the wise though, make sure this is something your fans will want, but always remember that a sticker or a button doesn&#8217;t cost that much to produce.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>6. Add Fan Pictures To An Official Photo Album on Facebook or Instagram<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This simple and free option is a great option for anyone nurturing a community of already highly dedicated fans. At a higher level of dedication, fans will simply want to be acknowledged and feel as though they are an insider, someone who belongs to the fan community. Always remember to think about the exclusivity of your offer. The idea here is that their email address essentially grants them access to the community, of which you publicly show appreciation.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>7. Access to Private Q&amp;A \/ Song-Request Video Sessions<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There are many different streaming video services, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/twitch.tv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Twitch<\/span><\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/stageit.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">StageIt<\/span><\/strong><\/a><strong>,\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/facebookmedia\/solutions\/facebook-live\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Facebook Live<\/span><\/strong><\/a><strong>,\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/help.instagram.com\/292478487812558\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">IG Live,<\/span><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">YouTube Live<\/span><\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">\u00a0,\u00a0<\/span><\/a>and our favorite,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/volume.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Volume.com,<\/span><\/strong><\/a> for livestreaming and Fan Clubs. These services will allow you to give private access to mailing list subscribers. Depending on what your fans would like from you, you can do quite a few different things, either speaking with them or performing for them. You can even monetize Instagram Live by posting in forums to exchange money for shoutouts. We suggest using <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Instagram\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">Reddit<\/a><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>8. Give Away an Entire Previous Album or Your Whole Catalog!<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This is especially effective if you are releasing a new album. While promoting the upcoming release, offer your fans the opportunity to get a previous album or even the entire back catalog of music for free in exchange for an email address.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>9. Create A Live Music Compilation<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>If live music is your focus and is truly where you shine, use this free offer as an opportunity to not only gain an email address but also to increase the excitement and desire for fans to come out and see your shows.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>10. Monthly Email with Exclusive Music<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>It is more of a long-term commitment than any of the other options; the big benefit here is that it will expand the offer&#8217;s value far beyond the initial email exchange. In fact, if the music you are producing and giving out for free, exclusively through this newsletter, is of a high enough caliber, this could be a great way to increase the dedication of your fans, ultimately converting them to super fans. Use<strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/volume.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Volume&#8217;s fan clubs<\/a><\/span> <\/strong>to support and deliver this option.<\/p>\n<h4><b>Technique #5 &#8211; Do A Giveaway At Every Show (Or If Your Fans Are Too Cool, Do it Digitally!)<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you are playing a show, hold up a CD, t-shirt, or any item of merch on stage and announce you are doing a giveaway. Please have a friend sweep through the venue with a hat and have everyone drop their business cards into the hat. When the hat reaches the stage, pull a random business card out and do a giveaway. If your fans don\u2019t have business cards, use note cards or post-its they can write on, or use a clipboard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have the winner come up to the stage and hold up the prize to show the audience.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is great subliminal marketing; it gives yourself and your merch a plug in front of everyone. Then, mention to the crowd that you will add everyone in the hat to your email list.
